Things that made me “estatic” last weekend ( and Monday)… .
Yea for James and the National in May (because we’ll be graduated by then =)

I was very “estatic” last weekend when I found two James albums (Strip-Mine and Stutter) on vinyl—I even paid more than I usually would for two used vinyls because 1) they were James albums on vinyl; and 2) I’m pretty sure that the chances of finding one James album on vinyl, yet alone two, is pretty rare.…at least I’ve never happened upon any James vinyls before, and I’ve been collecting records for a few years now. I also bought Richard Ashcroft’s Human Conditions, for the low, low price of $2.99 (sadly) only to lose it before making it back home (as it turned out I had a a CD-sized hole in my Rhino Records bag : (… . Good thing it wasn’t a vinyl-sized hole).
I was also very “estatic” to hear (on Monday) that The National have announced a spring tour and the upcoming May 2010 release of their new album, the yet untitled follow-up to Boxer (which I have been unpatiently anticipating for three years now…but I unpatiently anticipate everything). The band only has one L.A. area show scheduled (at the Wiltern on May 22nd), so I’m hoping to be there (Kady, let’s go). All tour dates are listed below:

A preview of what’s to come on the Goos’ forthcoming album, “Something for the Rest of Us”…I guess I’m biased when I say that I love it, because I love everything Goo-related…oh well, take me as I am =)

“It’ll all work out eventually…” -Tom Petty

Disappointment is a wonderland…
I just read part of a Rolling Stone interview with John Mayer, who is apparently trying to “keep it real” by saying “fuck” a lot. We’re supposed to feel sorry for him because paparazzi are ruining his wet dreams, but all I seem to feel is disappointed that he comes across as a douche. You can read part of the interview, taken from PopEater, here: http://www.popeater.com/2010/01/20/john-mayer-rolling-stone/?icid=main|main|dl2|link5|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.popeater.com%2F2010%2F01%2F20%2Fjohn-mayer-rolling-stone%2F.

Come on Thunder…Come on Thunder…
It’s raining and nothing goes better with rain than a good rain song…well except flannel… and grunge…and maybe my top-secret hot chocolate recipe…but I’ll stick to the songs for now…because upon us all…a little rain must fall… . .
“The rain floods gutters, and makes a great sound on the concrete… On a flat roof, there’s a boy leaning against the wall of rain …Aerial held high, calling “Come on thunder, come on thunder,”… . James, “Sometimes.”“When it’s cold as the rain outside, well then, so am I… So when it comes down, you’ll know I’m with you,” …Remy Zero, “Life in Rain.”
“It’s raining in Baltimore baby, but everything else is the same”…Counting Crows, “Raining in Baltimore.”
“I never thought it would ever go…I cursed the gloom that set upon us …But I know that I love you so…This is the mystery of the quotient…Upon us all a little rain must fall”…Led Zeppelin, “The Rain Song.”
“And streets that only turn to boulevards…And houses with back yards. . and it’s raining like hell on the cars,”…Ryan Adams, “Wish You Were Here.”
“She says it’s cold outside and she hands me a raincoat…She’s always worried about things like that…She says it’s all gonna end and it might as well be my fault…And she only sleeps when it’s raining,”…Matchbox Twenty, “3 A.M.”
“When the raindrops fall…And you heard it all…Let the fog winds blow away,”…Jesse Malin, “Little Star.”
(…to be continued…)

“When he spoke it would raise the roof, Peter Pumpkinhead told the truth…” -XTC
“The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead” by XTC is probably a little less popular than “Dear God” but I only discovered it sometime last year…my boyfriend loves it and I loved it instantly, mostly for its lyrics. The music video focuses on Peter Pumpkinhead as JFK (and certain parts are a little hard to watch), but the song itself could also refer to other inspirational figures, political or otherwise…here are the lyrics:
Peter Pumpkinhead came to town
Spreading wisdom and cash around
Fed the starving and housed the poor
Showed the vatican what gold’s for
But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees
Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
Who’ll pray for Peter Pumpkinhead?
Oh my!
Peter Pumpkinhead pulled them all
Emptied churches and shopping malls
Where he spoke, it would raise the roof
Peter Pumpkinhead told the truth
But he made too many enemies…
Peter Pumpkinhead put to shame
Governments who would slur his name
Plots and sex scandals failed outright
Peter merely said
Any kind of love is alright
But he made too many enemies…
Peter Pumpkinhead was too good
Had him nailed to a chunk of wood
He died grinning on live TV
Hanging there he looked a lot like you
And an awful lot like me!
But he made too many enemies…
Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
Who’ll pray for Peter Pumpkin
Hooray for Peter Pumpkinhead
Oh my oh my oh!
Doesn’t it make you want to cry oh?
